BMS Talk: Black things on sticks Field
For those of you who enjoy fungus forays, this BMS Talk is an introduction to lignicolous melanised fungi – those little black things on sticks - which can contribute to your fungal records. Better still, they give you a splendid reason to go out looking for fungi in the winter and spring!
Cameron Diekonigin is Chairperson of Edinburgh & Lothians Fungus Enthusiasts (ELFE) and a part time amateur mycologist who enjoys identifying microfungi, particularly members of the obsolete Pyrenomycetes (black Ascomycota that are most easily found on fallen wood and dung). Although he grew up in the South West of England, Cameron currently lives north of Edinburgh over the Firth of Forth in Kinross-shire where there are many species of black fungi growing on sticks.
20:00 – 21:30
BMS Talk: Mushrooms of Japan: common species and their cultural signifcance Education
The first BMS Talk of 2025 will take place at the slightly later time of 20:00 GMT, when Nathaniel 'Nat' Guy will give us a perspective on fungi through the lens of Japanese language, art and daily life.
Nat is author of Kinoko: A Window into the Mystical World of Japanese Mushrooms and this talk will delve into the process of creating Kinoko, from fieldwork and translation to uncovering the rich cultural significance of mushrooms in Japan. Attendees will discover Japan’s diverse mushroom species, the unique role fungi play in Japanese cuisine and folklore, and the poetic tradition of mushroom-themed haiku spanning centuries. Designed for passionate mycologists and enthusiasts, this talk will offer a unique perspective on mushrooms as seen through the lens of Japanese language, art and daily life.
About Nathaniel Guy
Nathaniel Guy is an author, Japanese translator, and amateur mycologist originally from Kentucky, USA. Having lived in Japan for nearly a decade, he combines his expertise in language with a passion for exploring the natural world, particularly mushrooms. Nat's book Kinoko: A Window into the Mystical World of Japanese Mushrooms, bridges the gap between mycology and Japanese cultural history. In addition to his work as a translator, he is an engineer who has contributed to numerous space missions, including NASA's Curiosity and Perseverance Mars rovers.

Workshop on coprinoid fungi Field
Taking place at Northern College, including 3 nights' accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Following regular requests from field mycologists for an up to date coprinoid workshop, we are running a three day event (Thursday to Sunday), led by Dr Derek Schafer who has been studying these beautiful fungi for at least thirty years and has developed very useable keys, some of which have appeared in past editions of Field Mycology. The venue at Northern College, Barnsley, allows us access to surrounding grassland and woodland.
Coprinoid fungi, now comprising six genera, exhibit a full range of micro and macro characters to support identification, as long as fresh young fruitbodies are studied before they turn to ink.
The workshop will use pragmatic keys to the genera, sections and species usable by those new to the study of these fungi. It will also provide an opportunity for those more familiar with the coprinoid fungi to discuss the impact of DNA sequencing on our knowledge of the diversity of these species.
Keys to the genera, sections and species will be provided and Derek will illustrate his workshop with great macro and micro images.
This is a great opportunity to learn more about these often short lived fungi in a supportive and friendly environment.
