Strengthening our society to maximise impact

BMS president, Prof Elaine Bignell, outlines the aims of the BMS's refreshed strategy  — July 2025

Back in 2022, under the presidency of Prof Janet Quinn, the Society launched a strategic plan – built around three core priorities – that defined how the Society would work towards achieving its overarching aims of supporting and promoting fungal research, education, recording and conservation across the UK and internationally. Through targeted initiatives aligned with these priorities, we set out to secure the Society’s long-term sustainability and resilience, enhance key resources and services, broaden our outreach, raise the profile of the BMS, its members, and volunteers, and support the growing community of mycology experts, enthusiasts, and newcomers.

Over the past three years, we have carefully tracked our progress against these plans, and noting excellent progress, began a new period of consultation at the end of 2024. During the Spring of this year, we consulted extensively with committee and council members to reflect on these priorities, assess whether they remain relevant, and identify opportunities for further development.

Our refreshed strategic plan reflects the outcomes of these consultations. Our core priorities have not changed significantly however the refreshed strategy sets out a new set of actions, ensuring we continue to build on our achievements, maximise the impact and efficiency of BMS activities, meet the evolving needs of our community, and heighten the visibility and excellence of fungal science and field mycology across the UK and beyond.

Elaine Bignell, BMS President

Maximising impact and visibility of BMS activities

We aim to raise the profile of the society’s awards, grants, journals, and events, making them more visible, inclusive, and accessible, and maximising their impact. From fresh educational resources to better field events and support for fungus recording, the aim is to inspire more people to get involved in mycology.

Reaching further and making connections

We want to welcome more members from all backgrounds and keep them engaged with meaningful benefits. A stronger communications strategy will help share the BMS’s mission and achievements far and wide, and promote the establishment of new strategic partnerships.

Building a resilient future

To keep the society strong for years to come, we are focusing on good governance, effective use of resources, smoother operations, and making sure its community is truly diverse and inclusive.

Later this year, we’ll be inviting our members and wider community to take part in a survey to share views on BMS activities and the strategic plan. The feedback we gather will play a key role in shaping and refining our plans — together, we can ensure our actions continue to deliver against the BMS strategy in a way that best reflects the needs and ideas of our community.
