Our Strategy

Our strategy defines how we will work towards achieving our overarching mission: to promote fungal science internationally.

BMS Strategy 2025 — 2028

Through focused actions aligned to our strategic priorities, we aim to ensure the Society’s long-term sustainability and resilience, improve key resources and services, broaden our outreach and raise the profile of the BMS, its members and volunteers, and support the growing community of mycology experts, enthusiasts and newcomers.

Priority 1: Improve and develop the Society's activities to achieve our mission and charitable objectives

Actions

  • Elevate the prestige and visibility of BMS Awards through targeted promotion and stakeholder engagement to boost participation and raise the profile of excellent contributions.
  • Increase awareness and uptake of BMS Grants through enhanced outreach, clear communications, and by showcasing grant-funded achievements.
  • Attract a higher volume of high-quality submissions to BMS journals.
  • Enhance the Annual Scientific Meeting and Student Research Conference to draw a larger, more diverse audience, and extend their reach through inclusive programming and digital access.
  • Optimise the field mycology events programme by tailoring content and format to attendee needs.
  • Review and develop the tools, systems and networks to support fungus recording across Britain and Ireland.
  • Renew and expand the Society’s educational resources by developing up-to-date, accessible learning materials for target audiences.

Priority 2: Extend our reach and raise the external profile of the BMS and its strategic mission

Actions

  • Expand and diversify the BMS membership by implementing proactive, targeted recruitment strategies to extend the Society’s reach.
  • Engage and retain members, with continued provision of relevant and useful member benefits.
  • Develop strategic collaborations with external organisations to enhance the Society’s visibility, influence, and impact across the wider mycological community.
  • Create a comprehensive communications strategy for the Society, underpinning all activities and supporting achievement of the Society's mission and objectives.

Priority 3: Embed the Society’s long-term sustainability and resilience through effective governance and improved operational procedures

Actions

  • Ensure the Society resources are effectively allocated and managed to maximise impact in delivering its mission and objectives.
  • Review and strengthen the Society's governance structures, policies, and processes to support effective, connected leadership and decision-making.
  • Improve operational efficiency and consistency across the Society by streamlining and standardising internal processes and procedures.
  • Foster a more diverse and inclusive BMS community by actively increasing the representation and meaningful participation of under-represented groups across the membership and wider activities.
