Field Mycology focuses primarily on the wild fungal diversity of the British Isles, including the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey (Channel Islands).

Reports and examples of the practice of field mycology from elsewhere may also feature, where they are of relevance and interest to the field mycology community. However, articles describing taxa which are new to science will only be considered for publication if their holotypes were collected within the British Isles.

The current issue — and past issues produced since 2022 (Volume 23 onwards) — are freely available to all on the journal website, which is published and maintained by the British Mycological Society. Volumes 1 — 22 can also be accessed via the site.

The evolution of our Field Mycology journal

During 2024, the BMS considered how to build on the previous editor's 25 year achievements in establishing Field Mycology as an attractive publication containing a range of interesting and topical articles. A key decision was to move from a member-only publication to an online, open access format — to reach as wide an audience as possible and stimulate interest in fungi.

While the content will evolve over time, it remains broadly the same as originally intended: our aim is for the journal to appeal to anyone who has an interest in field mycology and to make links to fungus recording, fungal science and fungal conservation.
