The British Mycological Society
offers a number of Undergraduate Student Bursaries to
give experience of research in any branch of mycology.
The awards will provide support for the student at a
rate of £150 per week (£160 per week in London), normally
for a period of between 4 and 10 weeks in the summer
vacation prior to their final year of study. Overheads
will not be paid but a sum of up to £250 is available
to the host institution as a contribution to consumable
costs of the research if funds are not available from
other sources and the expenditure can be validated.
No other payments will be made.

Supervisors at universities
and research institutions within the United Kingdom
and the Republic of Ireland are eligible to apply. Only
one application will be considered from each supervisor.
Students must be registered for a degree course at an
institution within the United Kingdom and the Republic
of Ireland. Awards will not be made for projects that
are a required part of degree work, or expeditions,
or for work outside the British Isles.
Students must take up the bursary during the summer
vacation before their final year. Applications on behalf
of students in their final year will not be considered.

|
The application, original and
one copy, must be made by the person who will supervise
the research and not by the student. Supervisors are
expected to discuss the project in detail with the nominated
student and the student is expected to contribute to
the project design. A one-page curriculum vitae for
the nominated student will be required, together with
a list of the supervisor's recent references. If the
application is successful, the Awards will be paid to
the institution by cheque in advance. The institution
is expected to administer the award. Awards are made
on the understanding that the institution ensures that
the investigation complies with all relevant safety,
regulatory and ethical requirements.
The closing date for applications is 31st March in any
year and decisions will be announced before the end
of May.

The awards take the form of
a voucher giving discount on the accommodation and other
charges set out on any booking form for a meeting or
foray of the British Mycological Society. Travel expenses
will not be met and normally only a single award will
be made to an applicant in any one calendar year. Applications
must be received at least two clear months before the
meeting to which they refer and maybe submitted prior
to the publication of a booking form.
|

 |
- to travel to meetings
- with
fieldwork or research projects
- to
buy books or scientific equipment
- to
hire meeting rooms or attend forays
- to support the cost of preparing
applications to the Heritage Lottery Fund for mycological
projects.
These Grants are open to all
categories of members of the Society.
They should not be used to support travel and/or accommodation
at BMS-organised scientific meetings. Awards will not
be made to supplement existing undergraduate awards
or replace institutional funding for undergraduate or
postgraduate research. Support for attendance at meetings
will be considered only if: other supporting funds are
available; the applicant is presenting a poster or paper;
the application is submitted normally at least four
months prior to the meeting. Normally only one person
will be supported from any one group to attend a meeting.
Applications based on hardship will be considered sympathetically
(and, of course, confidentially). The basic criterion
is that the award is used to promote mycology. Retrospective
application will not normally be considered.
Deadlines for applications are:
March 20; July 20; September 20 and December
20 in each year
