The main objectives of these activities are to:

  • have lots of fun
  • find out about what fungi do for us
  • find out about the fungus fruit body
  • understand that the main body of the fungus is not the fruit body

Activity 1: The mushroom parachute game

Activity 2: What is a mushroom (the fungus fruit body explained)

Activity 3: Making a fungal mycelium (how fungus fairy rings form)

Some of the outdoor activities listed here are modified from our Fungi 4 Schools ‘The Good, The Bad and The Fungi’ activity day; which was originally compiled by Liz Holden (Grampian Fungus Group) in association with Aberdeen Environmental Education Centre, Aberdeenshire Council Health and Safety Unit, Aberdeenshire Council Ranger Service, British Mycological Society and Buchan Countryside Group and with support from Scottish Natural Heritage, ‘The Good, The Bad and The Fungi’ activity days have been running in Aberdeenshire since 2001 and have received positive feedback from both teachers and children.

These activities can be run concurrently with the indoor activities outlined in Primary Resources 1: Indoor activities.
