The British Mycological Society (BMS) was founded in 1896 and has some 1400 members from many countries around the world, reflecting its international status. Its sole objective is to promote mycology in all its aspects. This is achieved by:

MEETINGS & SYMPOSIA

Meetings and Symposia with international programmes, including a Young Mycologists' Meeting and the Berkeley Award Lecture which is given by a professional member of 35 years or younger

JOURNALS & PUBLICATIONS

Journals and other publications, including Mycological Research, Field Mycology, Fungal Biology Reviews, all published by Elsevier, and a quarterley Newsletter called MycologistNEWS

FORAYS

Forays and workshops for field mycologists

The Society serves the wide range of interests of its members which include Biochemistry, Biodiversity, Biotechnology, Ecology, Evolution, Fungal Interactions with animals and plants, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Physiology and Systematics.

The Society is also active in the promotion of Conservation and Field Mycology and in education through schools, universities and with the general public.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in any aspect of mycology. Anyone uncertain of their depth of interest in mycology may prefer to join the Society as an Associate or join one of the regional Fungus Recording Groups.

The affairs of the Society are managed by a Council comprising Senior Officers and elected Ordinary Members. The business of the Society is organised through five committees of Council, the Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GP), the Scientific Programme Committee, the Publications Committee, the Field Mycology Committee and the Education Committee. The latter four report to Council for approval of proposals and recommendations through the F&GP.
